Where the prescription comes from
A prescription for a pet must be issued by a vet who has examined the animal and is familiar with its condition, in line with the cascade and prescribing rules that apply to veterinary medicines in the UK. Pet Pharmacy does not diagnose conditions or issue prescriptions. Our role begins once a vet has prescribed a medicine.
General steps for ordering a repeat
- Your vet issues a prescription for a named medicine, strength and quantity
- You provide the prescription details to Pet Pharmacy so we can verify them
- Our pharmacy team checks the order against the prescription before dispensing
- The medicine is prepared and sent out, with any safety information included
Why professional checks matter
Even for a routine repeat, medicines are checked by trained pharmacy staff rather than dispatched automatically. This matters because pet weight, condition and other medicines can change over time, and a prescription may need to be reviewed by the vet again after a certain period. When you need a new vet appointment
Most vets set a review period for long-term prescriptions, often every six to twelve months, so they can reassess the pet before authorising further repeats. If a prescription has expired, or if your pet’s condition changes, a new or follow-up vet appointment will usually be needed before medicine can be supplied again.
