General signs to watch for in dogs
- Noticeable change in appetite or water intake
- Lethargy or reluctance to exercise as usual
- Vomiting or diarrhoea lasting more than a day
- Limping, stiffness or difficulty standing up
- Excessive scratching, licking or hair loss
- Coughing, laboured breathing or unusual panting
General signs to watch for in cats
- Hiding away more than usual or general withdrawal
- Straining in the litter tray or changes in toileting habits
- Sudden weight loss or a patchy, unkempt coat
- Reduced grooming or increased grooming of one area
- Changes in vocalisation, such as more or less meowing than normal
- Reluctance to jump or climb as they normally would
When it becomes urgent
Some signs need urgent attention rather than a routine appointment. These include collapse, repeated vomiting, difficulty breathing, suspected poisoning, a bloated or hard abdomen, prolonged straining without producing urine, seizures, or heavy bleeding. In any of these situations, contact a vet immediately or an emergency vet service rather than waiting.
